Donald Trump
dominated the first Republican presidential debate on Thursday – stimulating
the event from the start by refusing to rule out running as an independent if he
failed to get the party’s nomination.
He was booed
by the normally supportive studio audience when he suggested he might not run
as a Republican, a prospect he has raised before, and something that worries
many on the right who remember the impact of Texas businessman Ross Perot on
George HW Bush’s re-election hopes in 1992.
Trump was
also grilled over his outspoken views on immigration, women, bankruptcy and
Barack Obama’s intelligence.
Key moments
included:
· . "I
don't have time for total political correctness," said Mr Trump, when
asked about misogynistic remarks
·
Rand
Paul attacked by Chris Christie for calling for surveillance curbs
·
all
candidates condemned nuclear deal with Iran
·
Jeb
Bush forced to defend his support for Common Core education
·
Mike
Huckabee to abolish the inland revenue service and department of education
·
join
Isis and you sign your death warrant, said Ted Cruz
·
John
Kasich said he would support and accept his daughter if she was gay
·
Mr
Trump stumbled somewhat on his past support for a national healthcare system
